What Does FSC® Certification Mean for a Sauna?
FSC Forest Week 2026 runs September 21–27, and the theme is “Do one thing for forests.” One small thing you can do today: check an FSC claim yourself, starting with what the label certifies and how to look up any company’s code, including ours.
FSC® certification means an independent auditor has traced a product’s wood from a responsibly managed forest through every business that handled it. The Forest Stewardship Council has certified more than 174 million hectares (431 million acres) of forest. Redwood Outdoors holds FSC chain-of-custody license code FSC-C210325, verifiable on the FSC public register.

Shop for a sauna and you will read a lot of language about sustainability, very little of which you can check. “Responsibly sourced” means whatever the seller wants it to mean, and nobody is auditing the adjective. FSC certification is one you can check: it comes with a license code, and that code resolves to a public record.
What is the Forest Stewardship Council?
The Forest Stewardship Council grew out of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, which ended without an agreement to stop deforestation. Environmentalists, businesses and community leaders gathered in Toronto in 1993 and established FSC the following year, headquartered in Oaxaca, Mexico. As of September 2026 it had certified 174,351,247 hectares (431 million acres) of forest and issued 71,992 certificates.
The more interesting thing about FSC is how it is governed. It is a membership organization of more than 1,000 individuals and organizations, including environmental NGOs, forestry companies, Indigenous Peoples’ organizations and social groups. Every member sits in one of three chambers: environmental, social, or economic. Each chamber holds exactly 33.3% of the vote. Each chamber then splits its votes equally between the Global North and the Global South. The General Assembly, which is every member, meets every three years to set policy.
That structure is the point: no single interest can outvote the others. It makes FSC standards slow to change and hard for any one side to bend.
What is the difference between an FSC-certified sauna and one described as “sustainably sourced”?
Both saunas can be described as sustainably sourced. Only one of those descriptions has anyone checking it.

An unaudited sustainability claim costs a company nothing and carries no penalty for being wrong. FSC certification costs an annual third-party audit and puts the result somewhere the public can read it.
What does FSC certification require of a forest?
FSC publishes what certification requires, in ten Principles and a set of standards anyone can download. These are the requirements that do the most work:

The conservation rule adds up. Ten percent of every certified forest is left uncut: not logged more gently, just left alone. Across every certified forest, that is at least 17 million hectares (42 million acres) standing inside forests that are otherwise being worked.
What do FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled mean?
The three FSC labels describe what is physically in the product, not how good the company is. FSC’s chain-of-custody standard, FSC-STD-40-004, sets the threshold for each.

FSC Mix is the label most often misread as a loophole. It is not one. The uncertified portion must qualify as FSC Controlled Wood, meaning an auditor has ruled out five categories of unacceptable source:
- Illegally harvested wood.
- Wood harvested in violation of traditional and human rights.
- Wood from forests where high conservation values are threatened by management activities.
- Wood from forests being converted to plantations or non-forest use.
- Wood from forests where genetically modified trees are planted.
Controlled wood is a floor rather than a gold standard, and the Forest Stewardship Council says so plainly, but an audited floor is more than most products get.
What does FSC certification mean for the sauna in your backyard?
Redwood Outdoors saunas are built from hemlock, a non-poisonous evergreen conifer in the Tsuga genus, sourced from responsibly managed Canadian forests. The wood is heat-treated rather than chemically treated: Thermowood is a chemical-free process developed in Finland that takes lumber through a series of temperature phases, reaching around 415°F (213°C) in an oxygen-deprived chamber so it strengthens instead of burning.
Here is the honest version of what certification adds. It is not a performance upgrade, what it changes is where the wood came from and what is known about it: the forest was audited against the ten Principles, every business that handled the wood afterward was audited too, and the chain is re-checked every year. Our certificate lists FSC Mix and FSC 100% as its output categories, with hemlock among the species in scope.
For a household heating that room two or three evenings a week for the next decade, the wood is not an abstraction. You sit against it, and it is what you smell when the room comes up to temperature. Knowing the forest it came from is still standing, and that a tenth of it will never be cut, is a reasonable thing to want from a purchase this size.
Why did Redwood Outdoors choose FSC® certification?
Redwood Outdoors chose FSC certification because it is a sustainability claim that does not rest on our own word. Our published position is blunt: while many brands use terms like “eco-friendly,” FSC certification is the proof behind the promise.
The logo alone would be a weak reason. FSC’s own 2025 consumer research, run by Ipsos across 40,802 consumers in 50 markets, found that just 30% of people in the United States recall seeing the FSC logo. Among those who do recognize it, though, 79% trust a brand carrying the mark and 59% would choose an FSC-certified product over an equivalent uncertified one. What matters is the audited record behind the mark.
The scope is worth stating plainly rather than rounding up. Most products in our collection are FSC certified, though not all of them, a narrower answer than a footer logo implies. How can you check an FSC claim yourself?
Any FSC claim can be checked against the Forest Stewardship Council’s public register at search.fsc.org. It takes three steps. Find the license code every certificate holder must publish, search it, then read the status, expiry date and scope on the record that comes back. Register record verified September 9, 2026, on a database the Forest Stewardship Council timestamped as updated the same morning.
Two things to expect when you run that search. The register lists the holder as Red Rock Outdoors Co., the legal entity behind the Redwood Outdoors brand, so the name on the record will not match the name on the sauna. And the record shows a product category (ours covers hot tubs and saunas) rather than a model list, so a valid certificate says a company is audited to sell certified saunas, not that the sauna in your cart is one.
The useful habit is to ask any sauna company for its license code. A company that has one will give it to you in a sentence. Most will not have one: as of September 2026, the FSC product category covering saunas and hot tubs listed three certificate holders in the United States.
FAQs
Is FSC certification the same as “eco-friendly”?
No. “Eco-friendly” is an unregulated marketing term with no audit behind it. FSC certification is a third-party standard with a published rulebook, a named certification body, an expiry date, and a public register anyone can search.
What does FSC certification actually change in the forest?
FSC rules prohibit converting natural forest to agriculture and require at least 10% of every certified forest to be set aside for conservation. FSC Principle 3 requires that Indigenous Peoples’ legal and customary rights to land and resources be identified and upheld.
Does FSC Mix mean the wood is not really certified?
FSC Mix means at least 70% of the material is FSC-certified or reclaimed, and the remainder has to qualify as FSC Controlled Wood: audited to exclude illegal harvest, human rights violations, forest conversion, threatened high conservation values, and genetically modified trees.
How often is an FSC certificate audited?
Under FSC’s chain-of-custody rules, all sites within the scope of a single-site certificate are audited annually, and certificates carry a fixed expiry date. The Redwood Outdoors certificate, GFA-COC-008071, is valid to December 19, 2029.
Can I check the FSC certificate for a sauna myself before buying?
Yes. Search the license code on the Forest Stewardship Council’s public register at search.fsc.org (Redwood Outdoors publishes FSC-C210325) and the record returns the status, expiry date, product scope, and species in scope. If a company will not give you a code, there is nothing to check.
A sauna lasts a long time, often longer than the company that sold it. That is reason enough to care where the wood came from, and to want an answer you can look up rather than a logo.
